Crepes of Wrath

Poll: Did you eat pancakes on the pancake day con?

Yesterday was pancake day. I ate pancakes.

I filled them with many fillings. Well, chocolate and cherries in some, butterscotch in others.

Is this stil the celebration it used to be, or is it simply another overcommercialised holiday, promoted by the manufacturers of lemon juice, eggs, flour, sugar and milk?

Anyway - It's now lent. Apparently I should give something up. I'll give up whacking myself in the head with a brick.

I ate pancakes yesterday. And on Saturday. Several times a month, usually. Proper thin crepes.

The old style fasting rules required abstaining form meat, meat products, fish, wine, oil, milk, and milk products for all of Lent.

So people would make tons of pancakes to use up all the milk, oil and butter in the house.

There is no more degenerate kind of state than that in which the richest are supposed to be the best.

Apparently you forget that some of us live in modern liberal democracies with proper seperation of Church and State and, consequently, do not have religious instruction in state run schools.

I mean, I know I've seen in some mixes the suggestion to add powdered sugar and lemon juice for "extra fluffy" pancakes, but I usually don't bother with it..

(Of course, I've also ground oats to make special pancake flour, and tend to use buttermilk more often than normal milk.. I shy away from mixes, and like to make my own batter from scratch..)

lemon juice is a traditional topping for pancakes, rather than an ingredient.

Not sure how the recipe differs exactly (do you add baking powder?) but American ones tend to be thick airy pancakes, served with maple syrup.

Maple syrup is expensive in this country though. And our pancakes are thinner made from a more liquid batter (crepes really). Traditionally we sprinkle sugar and lemon on them, and roll them up.

We just don't have the tradition.

Mainly it's just more eggs and thicker flour that makes American style pancakes (which I prefer slightly), but baking powder makes a touch of the difference.

Mmm, sugar and lemon.

I had tasty american pancakes baked for me by C (clink, no story). They rocked with Lemon, Sugar and a small tub of Tescos finest vanilla icecream.

A paczki (“Poonch-key”) is a Polish donut. It uses a richer batter than traditional donuts. These donuts are traditionally filled with raspberry or prune filling.
