Are boring.

Was at a Basics of Sharepoint class the past two days with the boss. And when they say "Basics", boy did they mean it. "OK, we're going to click on the link here that says Site Actions, OK, everyone with me? OK then we're going to click the link that says Create, OK, with me? OK now you're going to want to inhale a breath of oxygen, OK, everyone inhale? OK now you're going to want to exhale it - see what you're doing here is getting rid of the carbon dioxide, which is poisonous to your body, OK, evereyone exhaling? Yes, question from the blue fellow in the back?" It was useful in that I was at least focused on the Sharepoint site we had (setup for us by The Mothership), and had pretty much figured out the basics of how to manage the site in the first 30 minutes of the first day. There's value in getting away from the office for something like that, even if it did last about 10 hours longer than it needed to.

Jenn and the girls continue to do relatively well. We had a little bit of a nervous weekend two previous: Jenn had a positive fetal fibronectin, which as I understand it basically means "Well you might go into labor soon, or you might not". Negatives of this test are like 95% predictors of women not going into labor within 2 weeks time frame, but positives seem to become relatively worthless (though one stat we read said most positives end up delivering before Week 35).

So as a result of this test we had to go get a steroid shot, to kick start babies lung development, just in case. Two shots, 24 hours apart, first one on a Friday afternoon, no sweat. That night and the next morning, Jenn was having some pretty painful Braxton Hicks contractions, and they were coming about 6 minutes apart. By the time we went to the hospital for the second shot on Saturday they were 3-6 minutes apart. After the Keystone Pharmasists couldn't get the nurses the shot, they sent us to labor and delivery to check out the contractions. 3 hours later in there the babies were monitored and fine, the cervix was monitored and closed, momma was feeling better and we went home.

The upshot of all of this was that we (read: me) decided that Jenn had been trying to do too much lately, and it was time to put her on bed/couch rest. Her OB had finally pulled her from work after the positive fetal fibronectin, but still she was spending most of her time sitting in her chair in the computer room doing whatever, trying to do dishes, etc. No longer. And since then she hasn't had near the contractions (or at least not as severe/close), swelling in her feet and hands has gone down, all that. Since then the biggest problem is that ~9 pounds of baby (4lbs 4 oz and 4lbs 10 oz as measured by the sonogram tech yesterday) are weighing pretty heavy on her, it's painful for her to get up out of a chair, roll over in bed, etc. Which is the cause of must frustration to Jenn, but like I tell her, you're basically 40 weeks pregnant at this point, if we were having one.

But we're 33 weeks as of yesterday, and from what the doctors tell us, this is going to happen pretty much whenever Jenn goes into labor at this point, they won't try to delay it or anything. I bet 36 weeks the other night, Jenn, 35. They'll have some NICU time it sounds like, but none of the doctors have been concerned about this, so we're not really either. So until then, it's just kind of a waiting game. Life goes on, but the impending event sort of puts a haze over everthing you deal with. Fantasy Football is here, and I'm in 3 leagues like I am pretty much every year, but I probably couldn't name more than 2-3 players on any one of my teams. Regular NFL and college football are here, and I guess I know the basics - Favre to the Jets, Chiefs suck, can KU repeat their success this year? Cool, awesome games coming out soon: Force Unleashed, Spore, WoW expansion in November. Will I get them? Probably. Will I play them? Yes? At some point maybe? There's an election going on I guess, something about Tina Fey getting knocked up by Commander Tigh but blaming it on Jamie Lynn Spears? At some point I probably ought to think about turning off the air conditioning in the house since it's getting down into the 50's at night? The rest of the world is like a TV in an airport or bar with the sound off: If you watch you get the gist of what's going on, but it's hard to care unless you're really bored.

sharepoint.. by sasquatchan (2.00 / 0) #1 Fri Sep 05, 2008 at 10:56:02 AM EST
is pretty huge and complex. So I'd be careful about writing it all off.. Heck, installing it isn't necessarily trivial (at least all the CTPs and what not for 2007..) I think after a few tries, got pretty good at installing the actual released version, but still, the SQL setup, etc etc. (in a vm team environment, meaning several machines: a DC, SQL server, Sharepoint server, or a farm of sharepoints, etc).

Our counterparts in KC have done all the hard work on this one, getting the backend stuff setup, etc. About a year ago I tried to setup Sharepoint down here in a test environment and yeah, couldn't even figure out how to get a basic site going, and for all the documentation you can find on Sharepoint there really doesn't seem to be anything that just kind of sits you down and says "This is what Server is for, this is what Designer is for, Services, etc". Trying to decode all the MS Speak when navigating what is essentially three different products is not fun when you're trying to do it at work with your normal load there.
